Qualifier 4 – Sat AM
Winners; Shrek & Wreak – Cal Jones and Pete Brown.
With a full field of players, it was a hotly contested event where several teams started early with some fantastic scoring.
Innisfail Golf Course was in terrific conditions once again, with the assistance of club volunteers and local members who we can’t thank enough.
It took teams 7-8 holes to adjust to the challenging greens and very difficult pin placements but once teams figured out the layout, it was a birdie blitz to finish.
With 5 holes to play in the AM Event, there were 6 teams within one shot of the lead.
Team Shrek & Wreak completed their round with a fantastic score of Nett 10 Under and had to sit and wait patiently for the rest of the field to finish. We even saw Peter Brown out the back practising his 80 metre play-off shots knowing that Nett 10 under may be forced into a playoff.
As the last cards were handed in it was Team Shrek and Wreck hanging onto their first win as a combo holding 3 teams that were charging home at the end. Friends with Golf Benefits , Bazooka Boys and Chunk and Run all finished 1 shot behind at Nett 9 Under.
This is a great winning story for them as they have both played several qualifying events between them and this is the first time they have joined forces as a team taking out the title and taking home the Golden Ticket and advancing to Port Douglas Final.
They celebrated well into the night and continued those celebrations throughout the entire weekend. Great to have two Port Douglas locals take out a FNQ event, especially on Cal’s birthday.

Qualifier 5 – Sat PM
Winners; Bid Goodies – Kyjel Spencer and Frank Bidgood.
Round 2 for the afternoon got off to a hot start, a full field with some teams from the morning field who couldn’t get enough of the tournament jumping in for another shot at the golden ticket.
The outdoor bar was keeping the teams in great spirits with local sponsors KFC and McDonalds providing the fingerlicking goods and cold drinks on this 38 degree day.
Once again a very close front 9 with Bid Goodies and locals The Low Flyers – Jake Cockle and Ian Sanderson holding themselves strong as the stand out teams, with both to take a 2 shot lead going into the back 9.
A stand out performance of the day was father/daughter team – Sieky Golf – Wayne and Tegan Siekman who played their first ever golf tournament together which was great to watch as they were only 2 shots behind with 3 holes to play.
After a gruelling afternoon in the Far North Queensland heat all teams handed in their score cards with two teams locked on the same score…..
In classic Survivor style in front of a huge crowd of supporters we have a playoff, two teams leading with outstanding scores of Nett 12 under, both equalling the Innisfail course record; The Low Flyers and Bid Goodies battling it out for a spot in the final.
It took all 3 playoff holes to create our champions and it was Kyjel Spencer that rose to the occasion with a fantastic approach shot to seal the victory.

Qualifier 6 – Sun AM
Winners; Team Monster – Trent Mann and Luke Peters.
We saw some wounded heads from the night before arriving for day two of the tournament, thanks to the local Goondi Hill Hotel for their hospitality over the whole weekend.
Big shout out to Paul Tattam and Ian Saunderson for getting up early and cooking the Mighty Meats breakfast barbeque, after fueling up with a great feed the final round was underway!
For those teams that didn’t realise golf carts are a dime a dozen for this course they are well informed to ensure that they are booked in early for one next year and our new unofficial “sponsor” 3B cream was highly sort after and heavily applied for all those teams that were absolute troopers for walking the course all afternoon. Pins were in the same positions as the Saturday field so we were expecting some big scores.
After completing the first 9 holes it was Team Monster with one hand holding the golden ticket and one foot in the door of the Sheraton Grand Mirage, hoping to find their way up to Port Douglas, the question was: Could they hang on and last knowing the pressure was coming from 6 other golf teams?
Former Millaa Millaa qualifying champions Ty Williams and Jay Lloyd hot on their tails, breathing down their necks with only 2 shots behind and 5 holes to go.
On the 17th hole Luke Peters was faced with last year’s demons but rose to the challenge knocking a pitching wedge to 15cms making a crucial birdie on the 11th.
Coming down on the last hole they knew they needed a bogey or better to win this tournament.
Both missing short putts, feeling the pressure with the cameras and that professional feeling but Luke delivered the knockout blow with a 3 foot putt for the win, Resulting in Team Monster – local legends Trent Mann and Luke Peters taking out the third and final round and securing their place in the Port Douglas Final with a Nett score of 10 under. Again another great way to end the Innisfail qualifying event with two of their very own members taking out round 6!
