Townsville leg a huge hit for Survivor golfers

June 2, 2023

It was Survivor Golf’s first time at Tropics Golf Club, Townsville and we were made to feel very welcome. Townsville turned on beautiful weather for the event and the course was in magnificent condition.

A full field of 92 players had a great day. For 70 players it was their first experience playing in the Drummond Golf Survivor Golf Series challenge, and from the feedback I received, they had a fantastic day.

It was a close fought out challenge with many great shots and great scores being posted.

The winning team, 2 Balls 1 Hole (Steve Abraham and Matt Slade) had travelled down from Weipa for the weekend after competing previously at Atherton, where they finished fourth. They had enjoyed the format so much they wanted another crack and were able to post a win at Tropics. They birdied two of the last three holes to register a Nett 12 under, a very impressive score which was enough to win the golden ticket and secure them a place in the grand final in December at Port Douglas.

Crenshaws Men (Dwayne and Craig) and The Mad Slicers (Vaughan and Dave) finished in equal second place with Nett 10 under scores.

Everyone enjoyed the refreshments provided by Diablo and his spectacular drinks cart, the live music and the atmosphere at Tropics. A great day of golf and lots of fun, with many competitors taking home fantastic prizes!

Magnetic Island Round 14

After playing golf on Friday at Tropics. We boarded the ferry and cruised over the stunning ocean to Magnetic Island for Round 14 of the Drummond Golf Survivor Golf Series. The course was in fantastic condition and the scenery, including many koalas was amazing.

The tournament produced some very close exciting golf. After 15 holes, we had twelve teams within one shot, so we knew we had a great finish on our hands. Team O Cees (Brian Winkel and Terry Kingston) stood up when it was needed and birdied two out of the last three holes to finish with an impressive Nett 11 under and take out the day, winning by 2 shots. The boys celebrated long into the night and may still be celebrating! We look forward to seeing them participate in the final in Port Douglas in December.

Magnetic Island Round 15

For the Sunday session at Magnetic Island, we again had a full field, with many teams backing up from Tropics on the Friday to have another attempt at winning a Drummond Golf Survivor Golf Series event. The very scenic Magnetic Island course may seem easy, but it can be treacherous and often requires precision golf. After seeing Saturday’s scores, teams knew a score of around Nett 10 or 11 under was going to be required to win.

The DJs and Witty Grinners got off to a flying start and these two teams battled it out until the end! The Witty Grinners (Andreas Thiele and Jamie Stephens) were victorious with a score of Nett 11 under par.

The three rounds over the weekend provided some great entertainment, some brilliant golf and a fantastic weekend for all involved in the Drummond Golf Survivor Golf Series in Townsville and Magnetic Island. Thanks to both Tropics Golf Club and Magnetic Island Golf Club for hosting our events and for making us so welcome. Thanks to all staff and volunteers for all your help and support.

We are looking forward to our next Townsville event at Rowes Bay on Sunday 18th June 2023. Register at survivorgolf.com.au
