What a weekend at Atherton Golf Club!

May 30, 2022

Rounds 13 and 14 of the Drummond Golf Survivor Golf Series was held at the historic Atherton Golf Club in the Tablelands of Far North Qld. The two days of competition comprised of sold out fields with over 180 players participating.

We were treated with beautiful weather of 22 degrees and rolling greens equal to the best in FNQ. A huge credit to Karl and all the team for the state of the course which will ensure players venture back there in the next few weeks, months and years.

Saturday afternoon saw a very tight field with multiple highlights, birdies, eagles and some incredible recovery shots. Tension was building with 13 teams within 2 shots of the lead when the leader board was locked with 3 holes to play.

Survivor stalwarts Justin Cifuentes and Joel Anderson (The Double J’s) played some magnificent golf to finish at the golden mark of nett -10 and booking themselves a highly sort after spot in the Grand  Final.

It was then left to 2 teams to battle out a playoff in front of the 100 strong crowd. The DJs (Dale Farrell and Denver Magnussen) vs Kick On (Drew Brauer and Tony Chrome). All 4 players hitting cracking approach shots into the green.   Tony and Drew both slid their birdie putts past and it was left up to Dale and Denver. Dale hitting the lip to the roar of the crowd. Enter Denver… commeth the moment, commeth the man and Denver slammed the ball into the back of the hole, booking The DJs into the Grand Final while dually saluting the crowd.

 Round 14

Some sore heads rolled up early post a very successful Calcutta and late-night celebrations of the Day 1 winners.

Bacon and egg rolls and a fresh start provided some genuine excitement for the round 14 fields.

Local Team Daz and Dave got off to a flyer and were proving hard to catch early. Justin Cifuentes backing up Sunday and holding his strong form from the Saturday field.

Using local knowledge and producing huge finishes, Shaw Things (Daniel Shaw & Shane Dodds) & Team Migaloo (Lee Heidke & Justin Cifuentes) both finished the day on nett -8 and surged their way to victory. Due to Lee’s partner feeling ill on the morning of the event, Justin was unable to qualify twice which opened the door for two more teams to fight in a playoff for the additional qualifying spot.

The Dirty Birdies and Innisfail Skip Bin Hire found themselves in an epic battle in front of the home crowd.

In a very intense few minutes the all-female duo of Sam Duck and Alicia English showed poise and calmness to make a clutch par to nab the additional qualifying spot in the Grand Final. Let’s just say the girls partied hard well into the night.

Congratulations to all involved and looking forward to seeing everyone at the beautiful Maggie Island and Rowes Bay on July 15th and 17th
